Arriving in Kandy was one of the most memorable moments of my journey through Sri Lanka. After landing at Bandaranaike International Airport, I traveled to Kandy with a personal driver in a comfortable car. The drive through the winding mountain roads was effortless and enjoyable, allowing me to admire the changing landscapes without any concern about navigating unfamiliar roads. As we gradually climbed into the central hills, lush greenery, mist touched mountains, and charming villages unfolded before my eyes.
When I finally arrived at the Temple of the Tooth Relic, I was immediately captivated by its beauty and peaceful atmosphere. The elegant architecture, detailed carvings, and black, white, red and golden features reflected Kandyan art tradition and centuries of devotion and craftsmanship. As I walked through the temple grounds, the sound of traditional drumming using drums specific to the Kandyan tradition such as thammettama, geta beraya creating an atmosphere of deep spiritual honor of ‘Thewawa,’ and the sight of worshippers carrying lotus and jasmine flowers and cooked kiribath (rice cooked in coconut milk)in ornate plates created a deeply moving experience.
Standing among devotees from different parts of the world, I felt a profound sense of calm and spiritual healing. The sacred atmosphere encouraged reflection and gratitude, making me feel connected to something far greater than myself. Every corner of the temple revealed another architectural masterpiece, and I found myself constantly amazed by the dedication of the humble Sri Lankans that had preserved this sacred place for generations.
Equally unforgettable was the warmth and humility of the Sri Lankan people. From the welcoming smiles of strangers to the kindness shown by temple visitors and staff, I experienced genuine hospitality throughout my visit. Their respectful and grounded nature made me feel truly welcome and strengthened my admiration for Sri Lanka and its culture.

As I reflect on my visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, I realize that the experience offered was far more than sightseeing. It provided spiritual renewal, cultural enrichment, and a deeper appreciation for the traditions that continue to shape Sri Lanka.
