Stepping into the misty hills of Labookellie Tea Estate felt like entering a dream painted in shades of green. Dressed in traditional tea estate clothing and carrying a tea plucking basket and gear, I walked among the endless rows of tea bushes while the cool mountain breeze drifted through the hills. Under the guidance of experienced tea pluckers, I learned how to carefully select and pluck the tender two leaves and a bud, gaining a deeper appreciation for the skill and patience required for this timeless craft. The experience became even more fascinating as I followed the journey of the freshly picked leaves through the tea factory, watching each stage from withering and rolling to drying and grading. Later, I enjoyed a fragrant cup of flavourful Ceylon breakfast tea, rich in aroma and character, with a piece of chocolate cake, while admiring the breathtaking scenery around me. I spent time taking photographs of the misty landscapes, the vibrant tea fields, and the hardworking tea pluckers who generously shared stories about their work and introduced me to different varieties of tea. Every moment felt immersive, educational, and deeply connected to the heritage of Sri Lanka’s tea country.
Future Reflection
As the mist slowly drifted across the hills, I wished time could stand still and allow me to remain in that peaceful world a little longer. I dream of returning one day to walk those emerald slopes again, sip another cup of freshly brewed Ceylon Tea, and relive the magic of this unforgettable experience.
